I've been casually reading about it and watched a few videos describing the battle of the Somme after @registerfasterusing made this thread

His was exploring the French perspective while I chose to look into British accounts of officers and soldiers and the loses were insane. Literally thousands of people died in minutes. What is beyond me is how the generals found it acceptable to sacrifice so many soldiers for a few feet of mud. Sending waves after waves for soldiers to get mowed down by artillery and machine guns. 60,000 died on the first day. 60,000 in a single day is so surreal. That's like the population of a decent sized town all gone. What were these generals thinking?

Remember when guys in their teens and early 20s were sick off too much peace and prosperity, good trade ties, growing economy, no real life direction so they all went out on the streets in 1914 celebrating when the first world war kicked off :lul::lul:

we seem to not read up on history with the amount of niggas on this forum wishing for a third world war, (i was guilty b4 lol)

If you’d like to explore further, I highly recommend watching the documentary The Somme (2005) or the, albeit fictional and somewhat historically inaccurate, drama The Trench (1999).

From what I understand, many generals weren’t completely aware of the slaughter that was to ensue, or deluded themselves into thinking the casualties would be far lower than in reality. After all, they had dropped some 1.5 million shells on the German frontline in the week long preparatory bombardment prior to the battle. They were unaware that the Germans had built underground bunkers, in which they hid from the artillery.

Additionally, the British called off the bombardment too early before the attack at 7:30 AM, giving the Germans enough time (I believe about 2mins) to exit their bunkers and prepare the defenses and man their machine guns.

The British, believing the Germans had all been killed and that they could easily walk over their trenches, were slaughtered as they strutted the green, flower-draped fields of the Somme.

That is worse nigga. People LDAR and suddenly get killed by a drone/air strike. Nothing exciting about it. They don't even get to see the enemy. They might hear a projectile flying 2 seconds before their death and that's the only adrenaline rush you'll ever get. Also in the modern world you arr
E fighting not for your country or your people but to protect someone's revenue stream. There's no honor in it anymore
Infantry is now the most useless unit on the battlefield. I think that the era of infantry is coming to an end, now you need gamercels and programmers and junk drones from china and it would mog million-dollar tanks. Lifefuel for poor countries
