I'd argue the lifestyle of being in school/ college for longer is actually way more comfortable than having some blue collar or whatever job early on. That's why people choose to study for longer, they want to postpone having to work.

It's basically like being in school for longer, but you can wake up whenever you want to, surrounded by peers.
And I don't think most uni students study 8-9 hours every day. If you have a job, you'll definitely work that time every day.

Also it's totally over stated how long it takes to become a doctor. At least in Europe it's very feasible to become a medical doctor at 24/25.
