Farther back than many of you can remember, going to the gym wasn't the norm. It was only a very small subset of men who adhered to and were truly obsessed with the lifestyle. Mainstream perception of people who lift was characterized by undeniable stereotypes and stigma, but lifters loved it in spite of all this.
There was probably less body dysmorphia since this was more of a pre-social-media era, and the overall climate as a result was more pure.
Now lifting is lowkey an NPC trait, and you stand out by not hitting the gym.
