The modern version of military is just a private security force for capital. Some 70yo billionaire and his politician friends decide they want oil access or a new trade route or to keep the dollar as reserve currency, and the solution is always the same: ship a bunch of 19 goys with 95 IQs over there to get their legs blown off so the stock market can keep climbing.
