Man, I think you didn't get it. There weren't 17 females for every man. The gender ratio has always been 50/50. What the study shows is that for every man that reproduced, 17 women did. In other words, while almost all women got to reproduce, only one in 17 men did, the alpha male. The other 16 men got nothing. So yeah, there was a lot of competition and infighting for women.

And anyway there's no proof of this 17 to 1 ting anyway.

Any trait / behaviour that puts the survival of the group above the individuals could be selected for, it's the same principle. If some men in the group contribute to the groups survival and let the alpha male fuck the females without interfering because they are already sexually satisfied without females, that would increase the survival chances of that specific group.

The article has a scientist come in and explain what their findings were, it doesn't show the actual research because we wouldn't get it. Even if you saw the DNA analysis, you wouldn't be able to understand it anyways, it's not your area. That's not really how evolution works though, it's more like random mutations occur, most of these mutations are negative or dysgenic so they tend to get wiped out cause most individuals can't survive long enough to reproduce, the few positive mutations give the organism and advantage and allow it to reproduce more since it's more "fit" evolutionary speaking.

Along the way several other mutations are carried along that are not significantly eugenic or dysgenic.
