A lot of Swedes do have swarthy looks, sure the English might be darker on average, but the English are more uniformly the way they are, while Swedes have some Finnic or even swarthy people. plus Scandinavians were peasants who had to work all day in the sun, so their skin turned swarthy.

the criteria for what was considered "white" was different compared to now, you also have to consider the relationship between different european nations during that time. also white was used by anglos to compare themselves to the people encountered. it evolved with time.

The Saxons were originally a Germanic tribe settling in the south-eastern part of England back in the 5th century. “Anglo-saxons” didn’t exist before that time.

Ben Franklin is English so he might be biased and he’s dumb to be honest.

The English are the modern, mixed people (descended from Anglo-Saxons, Britons, Vikings, and Normans) and the nation that resulted from these settlements.

Im not talking about modern english people, im talking the english during ben franklin time. If he felt the need to seprate the saxons and the english, they were probably considered different tribes back than, even after a 1000 years or so after those germanic tribes migrated there.

He doesn’t make sense, I agree with you. The modern English can easily be argued to be more “swarthy” than the Swedish, or the Nords today lol. They are a mix of Germanic tribes and Celtic-speaking Britons (whose origins aren’t even known and understood fully to this day)

Its possible they looked different back than maybe, but who knows. Anyways, this convo helped me get a better grasp of the original white people, thanks.
