what is the best resource/place to learn a non-esoteric language online?

it wont get u to fluent level but you'll learn basic stuff that u need to carry casual conversations

I use Babbel, its better than Duolingo but Duolingo is good as well

Duolingo is good as far as free-to-pay resources go, doesn't Babbel charge a subscription?

duolingo is shit tbh
First make sure you understand everything about the grammar, read a grammar book or maybe just the wikipedia page would suffice
Then just get a dictionary and start reading some books, that's the most efficent way

Duolingo is good as far as free-to-pay resources go, doesn't Babbel charge a subscription?
Yeah, its about £30 for three months but better for grammar and has more techniques like flashcards and podcasts

watch movies and listen to music in the language you want to learn

Search ikenna on YouTube.

To summarize, do what kids do to learn a language, by listening (media), remembering words (anki), sentences (Pimsleur and assimil).
