Beta Carotene - what for and when to take it?

Questions for Beta carotene as i am fairly new to skin care and stuff like that.

Went to a store to get the CeraVe Hydrating cleanser but there was none left and i remembered that Beta carotene was good for the under eyes so i got it.

My main question is what other aspects does beta carotene help with, i have already heard that it gives a tanner look but other that what does it really do, and what time is it best to take it (ie. in the morning or before sleep) or can you just take it whenever.
