It's just compensatory aggression from status insecurity. He’s over-identified with a narrow skill (that doesn't even work IRL when someone pulls out a weapon) and uses it to prop up a weak self-image.

When an instance like this occurs, where he comes across someone who outclasses him on another axis, namely looks/attention/social pull, these types of guys always react by posturing where they feel safe.
Overall, this is just a very fragile individual with an overinflated ego.
