Put another way, they were/are blackmailing them. Something they seem adept at doing.
The “auditing” (which is like the Catholic confessional on steroids and all recorded - notably their sexual history (which is obtained via sleep deprivation and turning victims near psychotic - hence why psychiatrists get involved as they need to stabilise victims - and why Scientology is against psychiatry as psychiatrists know what’s going on).... yes, the auditing ensures they have a persons complete life history which they use against those wanting to leave the cult.
L. Ron Hubbard encouraged his followers to “fair game”/gang stalk dissenters. Yet Deuteronomy 27:24 states: “Cursed are they who attack another covertly.” Shortly afterwards in the same chapter it states: “Cursed are they who have sexual intercourse with an animal.” So fair gamers/gang stalkers are in the same bracket as those who screw pigs in God’s eyes - according to the Holy Torah..... Sounds a fair and just comparison.
And so Hubbard has done the spiritual EQUIVALENT of ordering his followers to shag sheep, pork pigs and fuck goats..... according to the Holy Torah..... Which would make Hubbard a semi-sage, a sower of an unclean path, an aborted spiritual aspirant, a servant of the reptilian mind and a slayer of enlightened consciousness..... In other words a servant of the satanic..... and they call it a religion? Hubbard is certainly one at odds with the Abrahamic line of prophets and their Great Teachings..... go figure.
