in china the government enforced vision exercise regimens for school children and it did nothing
to elaborate a bit on this, myopia nowadays is caused by a lack of time spent outdoors while growing up. but it's caused by the lack of sunlight reaching your eyes (which would cause dopamine to be released and prevent elongation of the eyeball), not by a lack of gazing into distance as a lot of people think. that would only play a really minor part, if any at all.
