Yeah generally you shouldn't, but in this case the salicylic acid is in his cleanser, so he'll wash it off before applying the tret and won't probably do any harm.

In theory Salicylic acid from cleanser should get absorbed into skin and when you apply tretinoin both of them are present at the same time
