Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) can look similar in men and women, but some symptoms may be expressed differently.
Common symptoms of BPD in men include:
In men, BPD is sometimes mistaken for other issues because it can present with more outward anger, aggression, substance abuse, or risk-taking behaviors.
Having one or two of these traits doesn’t mean someone has BPD. A diagnosis requires a consistent pattern of symptoms that significantly affect relationships, work, and daily life.
Common symptoms of BPD in men include:
- Intense fear of abandonment or rejection
- Unstable relationships that swing between idealizing and devaluing people
- Rapid mood changes (hours to days rather than weeks)
- Chronic feelings of emptiness
- Unstable self-image or sense of identity
- Impulsive behaviors (reckless driving, substance use, gambling, risky sex, overspending)
- Intense anger, irritability, or difficulty controlling anger
- Feeling suspicious of others or disconnected from reality during stress
- Self-destructive behavior or self-harm
- Suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts
