Hey guys,

I’m 16 and tomorrow I’m getting braces again. I had braces from around age 11–13, but my old orthodontist only focused on making my teeth straight and didn’t really address my bite. After treatment, I got a fixed retainer behind my lower teeth, but it broke around 6 times while eating normal food. It was super frustrating (and expensive each time), so eventually we decided to stop fixing it. About a year later, I noticed my front teeth (upper and lower front) had shifted again.

Now I’m with a new orthodontist who told me I actually have a deep bite that needs to be corrected, and she managed to get insurance to cover it.

My concerns:
  • I worry that correcting my deep bite might make my face look more recessed.
  • Currently, my upper front teeth overlap my lowers too much.
  • I’ve also noticed that my tongue posture isn’t ideal (it sits more in the middle instead of on the palate). When I try proper tongue posture, breathing feels a bit restricted.
Questions:
  1. Will fixing a deep bite with braces make my side/front profile worse?
  2. How is a deep bite usually corrected in orthodontics?
  3. Does it only intrude/extrude teeth, or can it affect the jaw position too?

I just don’t want to end up looking worse after this treatment. Any experiences or advice would be really helpful.

Thanks.

Ask for molar extrusion. Braces wont correct the core issue anyway, unless if she Puts rubber bands on your molars to extrude them.
