Introduction
Movie criticises: consumerism, wall street, nature of capitalism, pop culture, superficialism and materialism. I will go through some of the important scenes and explain how it applies to modern society, especially nowadays, since clav appeared and looksmaxxing became mainstream. Hope you enjoy.
Shallowness of main character
Patrick bateman - main character of the movie is the representation of modern superficial society. Bateman is mentally ill, He has anti-social disorder sociopathy/Psychopathy, delusions, schizophrenia, narcissism. He does not have real emotions, feelings or anything unique we could say, no depth whatsoever, he only cares about his visual appearance: way he looks, way he is dressed, his house, money, etc. He is so obsessed with those things has this killing fantasies, where he wants to murder anyone who is even slightly better then him and this scenes shows that very well.
This is obvious critique of superficial society, he literally wanted/fantasized murder of paul allen and later that faggot ginger guy because of what? a fkn card.
After that he larped as paul allen and whole series he possesses different characteristics of famous serial killer, i wont go too deep, but his habit of keeping the victims hair, keeping body parts in fridge, etc. is found in famous serial killers, this highlights his shallowness even further. Good symbolism of that would be this scene at start:
Obvious symbolism that patrick bateman is just entity, a mere mask thats it.
He is also narcissist, he's habit of looking at himself even during sex.
he does not even enjoy sex itself, he simply loves looking at himself during sex, that could also explain why he films both intercourse and murders.
On top of this he clearly states that he does not wants any of this he simply wants to fit in.
People around him are just as much shallow as him
Self-explanatory, if you remember that scene in bar where he confesses about everything to some chick, or when he tells everything to his lawyer they simply laugh it off nobody cares literally.
What movie criticises (CONCLUSION)
pop culture - main explains pop music to them before killing his victims, this is obvious critique of pop culture/pop music.
wall street, capitalism, competition - everyone there is trying to better than one another is the most funny way possible. They dont work but are rich and wealthy movie tried to criticise wall street with this one and scene where patrick kills homeless guy and tells him to get a job was criticism of capitalism.
There is also interesting thing about the movie is that you dont know which murder is real and which delusion, for instance atm machine scene was obviously fake and after that bateman simply lost it.
Main character is also relatable to all of us, we put up a mask we try to fit in places, fake social interactions, etc.
