Every generation said "Men aren't manly anymore", it's an evergreen. But if you look back, the standards for "manhood" were different at any age. People today make fun of men who want to wear "feminine" clothes. Well, remember this is how the elites dressed in the 18th century.
And they say men today are too soft and we need strong men. But for example, men were very intimate with other men in the old times. I guess pictures like this would be considered "gay" today.
The definition of manhood was always dependent on the random outcomes of the complex social environment of the time. Many, many things influenced it. Today, many argue that men are weak, but people always said this, and in many ways it can be said that men today are manlier than men of other ages. Things like fashion and hobbys are very gender-segregated today, and male friendships don't include much physical touch. This wasn't always the case.
We have no idea how people will look back at our time. Maybe they will see how men in our age wear suits and think men were very manly, and they will see pics like this and think this was the average man back then ...
