Yes but it’s imagery. For example it says the smoke will go up forever but this is a reference to earlier in the Bible when this place Edom was destroyed and it also said the same thing. But clearly smoke is not going up still, just means it got destroyed. Jesus also says both body and soul will be destroyed in hell (of the unrighteousness people). So not everyone believes hell is burning forever but rather that the soul is destroyed in the fire (literal or not). A big reason people believe souls can’t die was later tradition because of the Greeks and Romans. And there was this book Dante’s Inferno which isn’t the bible and it’s much later but people got inspired by it. In the Bible it says the soul dies.
