The Alexiad is a medieval biography of the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komenos (1081–1118). It was written several decades after his death by his daughter, princess Anna Komnene, who describes his rise to power and his overall successful efforts to halt the empire's ongoing collapse.
One of her father's main antagonists were the Normans who had recently conquered southern Italy and now tried to usurp the Byzantine Empire itself. While she was understandably hostile towards them, seeing them as treacherous barbarians, she was also clearly smitten by their appearance, a detail which she made sure to include in her book.
