When cats began domesticating us, there was selection pressure to have kittens that would be cute to the humans who owned the farms with the granaries that attracted the cats fed on and the warm homes the cats could live in during cold and rainy weather.
Cute kittens would be kept; not so cute would be driven out. There was also selection pressure for cats to evolve a cry that was similar (if not identical to) that of a human baby. Cats lucky enough to be born with this ability wold be better attended by the humans they were domesticating, would live longer, and thus have more offspring.
