I don’t want to say too much, but I work in a bar. There was a concert going on, and we don’t usually have bouncers unless it’s a special occasion. This time, we did.

I was just doing my job, pouring pints, when a guy about 5'3" at best walked in, saying he was going to be a temporary bouncer because the place was about to get busy with fans from a band. He carried himself with a certain pride, almost like a Napoleon complex, and had that typical bouncer ego. But none of my co-workers took him seriously. For context, I work with a majority of women.

When he walked away, I could hear them laughing and crying with laughter. They couldn’t fathom that he was a bouncer or security guard and made fun of him, saying he looked like a child which, in fairness, he did. What struck me was that, despite his personality seeming to overcompensate for his height, people still noticed his height before anything else.

The prejudice against him was surprising even to me. At 6'5", I found myself wondering if I had unconsciously reinforced that same prejudice because of his height, or if it was more about him being a security guard (a role often associated with arrogance). Maybe it was a bit of both.

Either way, I caught a glimpse of what some men face regularly judgment and ridicule over something they can’t control.
