Here is Buzz Osborne lead singer of the Melvins, a band from Aberdeen Washington.
Ever heard of him? Probably not. Melvins made Grungey / Metal music and were somewhat popular in the 90s. They were highly critically acclaimed but never received major success and their popularity was not lasting. Buzz Osborne was good childhood friends with a kid name Kurt.
They grew up together, practiced music together and even had a band together called fecal matter in their teens before spitting up shortly after. They both drew heavily from each other when making music and deeply respected each other as artists.
They both made music with a similar aesthetic and had a lot of the same inspirations. Both bands were very talented and extremely critically acclaimed. But one band became worldwide superstars and defined a generation, and the other enjoyed only modest success and were quickly forgotten in the mainstream. Any ideas why?
