Yeah I understand that principle. I've interacted with Americans irl before and they tend to be beefy and look unhealthy. Their diets suck and all that. I live in Britain. I know this from first hand accounts of my immigrant friends from EE, especially Poland. Of course people live paycheck to paycheck everywhere, but life in the west is just easier due to higher wages, lower cost of comfort goods relative to salaries and a welfare state to ensure you can't really hit rock bottom. Even if you're a lowlife junkie the government will provide you with housing ,benefits and drugs so you don't freeze, starve and cause trouble on the streets. There just isn't really a way to fail in the west because of the safety nets.

P.S: Yeah, I'm aware a lot of people struggle, hence the "in big cities" specification.

Most people in big EE cities struggle more than those in the west. Of course the GDP of capital cities will be high because a disproportionate number of the elite live there, boosting the mean GDP per person but doesn't tell you anything about the actual average. The median and mode average product of people in eastern European capitals will still be much worse than those in the west.

That's confirmation bias tho, because of course the dudes that are flying to Britain are gonna be the ones struggling at home.
