You're answering a thread over a year old by now.You can get away with lower jaw surgery if you have enough space i.e the overjet caused by your upper teeth, to move the jaw forward.
If you have a 5mm overjet, they can move it 4mm. If you have a 10mm overjet, they can move it 9mm. Your upper teeth has to be 1mm more foward than the lower.
If you have a 10mm overjet (after deceompensation), then lower alone would suffice given your upper jaw is in a fine position.
They were able to create a 6mm overjet for me with braces, and since my upper jaw was slightly recessed, add in a 5mm lefort which allowed a total of 10mm for the lower.
I'm post bimax and still swollen. I dunno, I feel 5mm may have been a tad bit too much, but it's like 4 days post surgery so it's likely the swelling that's deceiving me.
