Yeah I think the main thing is just having self confidence. Ugly people want to ascend not to impress other people, but to feel better about themselves. Everyone really is motivated just by their own self interest, they don't care how people will treat them itself, instead they care about how they feel when people treat them better. To stop craving validation you (and myself too) need to be confident with yourself regardless of how other ppl treat you.
