what is the protocol and what are the benefits to this diet? I've heard a lot of talk about it but I don't have a good grasp.

It s about boosting the metabolism and curing disease .
The basis is that you have to get all micronutrients needed , as for macronutrients you go for animal protein, sugar from fruits milk and honey, saturated fats like butter and coconut oil .

Why is that a diet tho
Because it s specific about what you can eat and what you should avoid, for instance most starches and PUFA are banned, and white sugar isnt bad .
Ray peat ate like 400grams of sugar a day from orange juice and milk.

Clearly not considering we have smartasses who think "le plants are bad" when in reality said people are misinformed.

imagine the keto/primal diet community on the internet.
You have some level of overlap and influence from right wing communities like 4chan bodybuilders, conspiracy theorists ect. mishmash of teenagers, doctors, orthorexic dieters, supplement addicted pill poppers, chronic medical conditions and post menopausal women.

The biggest difference is that a community like the keto diet shares a methodology and set of goals with more mainstream diets. See any debate on YouTube. Emailing ray peat, you would garner about as much interest in cholesterol levels as with the existence of fairies - medium, ray peat is very open minded and a voracious reader.

The reason Dr. Peat is so detached from the most common dietary talking points is mostly because he was so old

Dr. Ray Peat isn’t a doctor in the way you would assume by the job of dietician. He has a PHD in physiology from a liberal arts university as a custom study area. His thesises were on

1 expierements on the application of progesterone in hamsters

2. 18th century poet William Blake and his view of biology

( ray peat considered himself mostly an artist who couldn’t sell his paintings. No doubt Blake reminded him of himself, look him up Wikipedia)

So even before 1950 when he started he did his own research into science and had many points of contention with mainstream research. He said that in college he would spend all day reading studies in the science library and only saw 2 of his professors ever (he disagreed with them and they kicked him out/didn’t call on him/cut him off because they got debunked)

example would be modern evolutionary and genetic theory, Ray Peat was a supporter of the larmarckist research of people like Paul Kammerer and Trofim Lysenko - who he attempted to interview on a visit to the Soviet Union.

Pile these up over 70 years and you get a completely divergent world from the rest of dietary research. Add people like Haidut and you have completely different supplements, goals, procotols, sets of commonly cited facts ect.

And what s the problem? The common ground ray peat has with any other diet is the elimination of bad foods and the introduction of good foods .
Ray peat said himself this is the reason people see results on a keto diet: they finally switched to nutrient dense foods, however he disagrees that we should run on fats as fuel.
Also he did talk about cholesterol

the sugar from fruit is around half fructose, half glucose. fructose intake really should be kept low (under 10 g/day ideally imo) becasasue its more effective at inducing the maillard reaction (meaning fructose causes more aging than glucose). fructose is metabolized mainly by the liver which is a problem because it can lead to fatty liver disease. additionally, fructose stimulates the appetite whereas glucose supresses it. this means fructose can lead to over eating.

fruit is not necessarily natural btw as many fruits have been bred to be higher in sugar and have other unnatural qualities.

the sugar in milk is lactose, made of 1 glucose 1 galactose. galactose is used to accelerate aging in labs.

also, all sugars increase blood sugar which means increased insulin, igf-1, and they can form advanced glycation end products throudh the maillard reaction

also, the suagr from fruit is generally of a similar ratio of glucose to fructose as sucrose. so actually its the same as white sugar (sucrose)

fruit is not as bad as pure sucrose obviously because it has other beneficial components

but fruit sugar should be minimized which is why i eat avocados and sweet peppers for fruit, yielding very little fructose. you should get carbohydrates in the form of glucose only like rice or potatoes

This is absolute cope , if anything keto or high stratch diet leads to NAFLD

This is also cope, pythochemicals and antioxidants in fruits counteract glycation , whatever study you re referring to probably fed rats pure fructose which is completely different compared to fruit .
Might as well chug down on coconut oil and see how it works out.

I Dont have time to spoon feed you the knowledge i hold , just read the works of our lord Ray Peat (may peace and blessings be upon him) and then decide for yourself .
