Can you actually help a friend to stop being a drug addict?

I had a friend back in highschool who got cucked by his ex and ended up taking weed then harder drugs then joining some weird cult (freemasonry)

Tbh I've lost contact, But last time I've met him he mentioned taking shrooms then said he knew a friend who sell meth and also he sells drugs himself

I've used a lot of drugs and I'm totally sober now.

People abuse substances for reaons, at the peak of my drug use it was because I was in a lot of pain.

I suspect he's going through something similar.

I've tried that tbh countless times but it felt like there's nothing I could've done even tho I really wanted to help the guy, It might also be because of the people he associated with since the town I live in are filled with druggies and just bad influence overall.

Sometimes you can't save people.

Nobody came to rescue me, I had to do it myself.
