To tell Asians apart:

1. Are they Asian, if yes then you can not tell by simply looking as they are indistinguishable.

2. Ask them their name, does it sound like chings and chongs or is it westernized?

3. If it sounds like pans banging together, then you won't know what person you are talking to so you will have to pretend you do. I recomend saying "Oh good to see you again, how is med school" or "tell me about that video game you were playing"

If it is a western name narrow it down, you probably know ten asians named Jeremy, but you would only know one Asian named Mitch.

4. If it, unfortunately, is an Asian with a common western name, ask for the last name, there is still a chance there last name is unique and not Liu or Lee.

5. Make sure the person wasn't just a white guy looking into the sun.

It depends, from their name or accent I can usually tell, but just from looks its harder. I can tell if they are generally southeast asian or northeast asian since they will have a different look, like they will usually be shorter, with darker skin, and a different facial morphology, if they are from the southeast. But to tell apart chinese or korean or mongolian, no way I could do that
