It's worth pointing out (it's not, but I'm gonna do it anyway) that they saw potatoes as a weird foreign thing and didn't want to cultivate them to the point where the government had to force government-owned peasants to do so. Potatoes only started to become widespread in Soviet Union, where all the production of bread became government owned.
Bread was near religiously worshiped though. Even nowadays, people think it's weird that I don't eat bread.
