Cats are low maintenance, they take care of themselves, if you live in a rural area you don't have to do anything, just allow them in your yard, they can find their own food and water.

Then they proceed walking around and smearing that on everything they touch. Cats should not be let outside because they are an invasive species when kept outside. Feral cats kill over a billion birds every year in the US. Cats are literally pests, like rats.
Lol, my grandma lived in a village, she had a house and a nice big garden, she never adopted a cat, they simply came to her and allowed them to stay in her yard. They've kept rats and other pests away. Occasionally neighbor cats would come to visit, they could move their residence there, or her cats would move in the yard of a neighbor, then return after several months, it was all very open - the cats basically roamed freely in the whole village, they choose you, you didn't choose them...

cats have no impact on pest populations other than making them less visibly present, they just change their behavior and their numbers don't go down.
