It's because of those damn smartphones, people are so addicted to them now, they constantly look at them, for messages, latest youtube or tiktok clips, etc. - they just don't have the patience to look at anything longer where not much happens for most of the time, like sporting events anymore; it's not just football, many sports also have have become less popular and fewer and fewer people watch them.
