I had accent classes for a couple of months and it did make difference. I speak like someone who has been outside of my home country for a long time but the signature still remains.
The problem with changing an accent as opposed to learning a language is that it's automatic. Vocab and grammar are intellectual. Accent is physical muscle memory. In my mother tongue of Malayalam. Many sounds that are present in english are simply absent. There's no substitutes for them because they are so distinct and different so the brain to cope just takes a familiar sound in the mother tongue and extends it in some way or other to mimic the sound of the language you are trying to speak.
This is called accent. It's also automatic. you don't even think about it. which is why correcting it or changing it is difficult. You can fake it by putting your mind it to it but muscle memory takes a lot of time and repetition
