The mongols were masters of Terror.
They initially were pretty poor at siege craft, so they committed extravagant atrocities to persuade cities to surrender.

After they defeated the Rus at Kalkha River, the mongols piled the captured nobles under a wood platform.
The victorious had a celebration party on the platform, crushing the vanquished into the soil.

Their military tactics were brutal, too. They’d force captured enemies to fill moats with their bodies and push siege engines against their compatriots’ walls.

During field battles, they treated enemy soldiers like wild game, Circling and corralling them into a single point.
They would purposely leave gaps in their encirclements to grant beleaguered enemies false hope of escape. Panicked soldiers would rush out, only to be fallen upon.
