I thought a big part of chess is pattern recognition as well? You have like a book of stratagems that you learn and memorize?

Yeah counting also has some of these elements
You need to know basic strategy very well for isntance
That is basicly memorising it

I remember Bobby Fischer in an interview complaining that chess had been reduced to effectively a game of memorization instead of skill.

Have no idea whether he was right or not

Everyone glorifies it blah blaj blah its so hard but in reallity its not that terrible if you practice a lot
