CHIN DIMPLES: THE NEW META [HIGH EFFORT]

CHIN DIMPLES: THE NEW META

Chin dimples and cleft chins, are, in my opinion, some of the most underrated traits that can make your face more unique and attractive. If you are anything like me, and were born with a chin dimple, you may have wondered if this small imperfection is a blessing or a curse. In this thread, I will explain the process behind the formation of chin dimples and cleft chins and break down how they can potentially make you more attractive. This is my first post on here, so let me know if there is anything I can improve for the future.
PART ONE: THE BASICS

1783999607816
1783999648698

From Left to Right: Regular Chin, Cleft Chin, Chin Dimple

Many believe that the terms "cleft chin" and "chin dimple" are interchangeable; however, there is a small difference between them. A chin dimple is exactly that, a circular dimple in your central chin pad, whereas a cleft chin is a vertical notch.

Chin dimples and cleft chins are genetic traits that are formed before you are born. Many people believe that cleft chins are exclusively caused by incomplete fusion of your lower jaw; however, this is incorrect. I will explain this further in part two.

Cleft chins are a relatively rare trait. There isn’t enough research on this topic for me to tell you the exact prevalence of cleft chins, but Google told me that around 5-25% of the world population has a cleft chin.

Many attractive people have cleft chins or chin dimples, which are traditionally seen as positive traits that make your face appear more masculine. Examples:

1784000416385

From Left to Right: Henry Cavill, John Travolta, Handsome Squidward

Would these people still be attractive without their unique chins? Sure, but the point I am trying to make here is that for the vast majority of men, chin dimples and cleft chins do not result in lower levels of attractiveness. On the contrary, they give people a unique facial feature to remember you by. Before, you may not have noticed John Travolta's chin dimple, but after pointing it out, you won't be able to forget it.

PART TWO: ANATOMY

In order to understand how cleft chins and chin dimples are formed, you must first understand the anatomy of the chin. The chin, like many other parts of your body, is made up of distinct layers. From the most superficial to the most deep, these are the epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous fat, fibrous septa, mentalis muscle, periosteum, and bone layer. I am mainly going to focus on the mentalis muscle and the underlying bone layer with regards to how they form chin dimples and cleft chins.

Cleft chins and dimples do not originate from a single anatomical structure; rather, they are a result of the interaction between multiple different features. First, the skin does not play any role in creating a cleft chin. It simply adapts to the shape of the tissue underneath. The subcutaneous fat layer and fibrous septa play a role in the appearance of cleft chins and dimples, making them appear shallower or deeper. The mentalis muscle is the muscle responsible for lifting your lower lip and wrinkling your chin. It can play a huge role in making dimples more visible. Finally, I think you guys can understand how variations in the structure of the periosteum and bone layers can lead to chin dimples.

From Left to Right: Muscles of the Lower Third, Mandibular Symphysis

Most people believe that cleft chins are strictly a result of incomplete fusion of the jaw at the mandibular symphysis. However, this is not the case as fusion of the jaw occurs during your first year of life, and many adults with prominent cleft chins actually do not have any deformities in the underlying bone. Conversely, many adults with deep impressions in the bone below the chin actually do not have any visible chin dimples. This supports the idea that chin dimples and cleft chins are not a result of one single anatomical variation, but a combination of many different factors.
PART THREE: FACIAL HARMONY

Based on my anecdotal experiences in real life and online, I can tell you that people generally think pretty positively of chin dimples. While there is no quantitative evidence to back up the claim that chin dimples and cleft chins are attractive traits that improve facial harmony, it seems to me that the vast majority of people either view cleft chins and chin dimples in a positive light or don't think much about them at all. They are, essentially, a no-cost benefit. It should be noted that the impact of cleft chins and chin dimples on attractiveness depends largely on other features such as chin projection. A chin dimple is always going to look better on a projected chin compared to a recessed chin, and chin dimples can look completely different on narrow and wide chins.
PART FOUR: DIMORPHISM

While both men and women have cleft chins and chin dimples, they have traditionally been seen as more masculine traits. Women with cleft chins sometimes seek out procedures to fill in their cleft chin in an attempt to look more feminine. While I personally agree with the idea that chin dimples and cleft chins are masculine traits, they don't necessarily look bad on women. In fact, there are many female celebrities who have chin dimples.

PART FIVE: PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

There are various ways to both acquire and remove cleft chins and chin dimples. One of the most common procedures you will hear about is a mentoplasty, which is the general term for a chin surgery. A mentoplasty can include temporary filler (would not recommend) and fat grafting to fill in a chin dimple, mentalis muscle imbrication, genioplasty, and dimpleplasty to create a chin dimple.

Before and After Chin Dimple Enhancement
PART SIX: CONCLUSION

In conclusion, while a small mark on your chin may seem completely irrelevant and insignificant, chin dimples and cleft chins can actually have a substantial positive impact on attractiveness. While I definitely wouldn't recommend going out of your way to get surgery in order to get a chin dimple, having one definitely does not detract from your physical appearance and instead enhances it.
