China Cancels Pork Shipments

China canceled 12,000 metric tons of United States pork shipments amid a high-stakes trade standoff between the superpowers, according to data released Thursday.

China, one of the biggest U.S. trading partners, axed 12,000 metric tons of U.S. pork orders, the data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows.

Neither Xi nor Trump can afford to lose face here despite the tariffs being mutually very damaging.

Xi has been passing food security laws to try and make China more food self-sufficient but they're far from it.

The thing is Trump is vulnerable to the market backlashes and different political interest groups breathing down his neck.
They'll be far greater political onus on Trump to concede than the Chinese thanks to their political systems.
The agricultural lobby will lose their shit with Trump.

I think it will take some time for them to come out of their bubble. Things seem to be moving slowly. No tariffs were being collected on ports for some time

maybe if they had good food stantards other places would take the pork

Trade will just stop or be hugely disrupted when tariffs come into effect.

I think Xi can afford to fight an attritional battle longer than Trump even if it’s damaging to Chinese interests.

Neighboring countries like Mexico import on the same scale.

It’s not that bad for the US in the grand scheme of things -worse for China.

Trump gets out of line though and the Treasury markets can go ape shit!

It won’t bring back jobs.

The US has already introduced tariff exemptions since a lot of their domestic production relies on components imported from China.

Even if tariffs hold, low quality goods will end up being imported from other developing countries instead.
