I predict that in the coming centuries the US and China are goin to become colonial superpowers in space with the US slightly ahead. Eventually I think the both are going to be overtaken by space based culture as the physics advantages of having a civilization in space will eventually surpass any planetary nation. Both nations most definitely will determine the future of mankind for centuries to come. @Qazqa

My theory is that the superpowers of the future are going to be space based nations located in orbit around the jovian planets. There is plenty of helium 3 for fusion, minerals for building, and saturn's moon titan is a giant heat sink which makes it the ideal environment for large scale computing.

To put it simply, china lost the opium war because the qing refused to switch to an industrial economy out of fear of losing power. Japan was so succesful because it managed to successfully create an industrial age millitary.
