Being around them I feel heavy, weighed down, and miserable.

Stay away from fundies at all cost. If you are worried about the afterlife, devour as much content as you can that contradicts the empty threats from fundies. For me, positive stories about NDEs helped, as did watching all of Richard Dawkins' content. You might say those two are contradictory, but not really. Think of it more like a probability distribution, with many possibilities, and you don't have to fixate on having the perfect single correct answer.

There are many possibilities of what the true face of reality is. Maybe it's purely chaos, forces of nature driving evolution without any direction or plan. Or maybe there is an afterlife, and it is truly positive, loving and forgiving, as many positive NDEs all report similar things, despite being from different religions.

There are many ways to prove to yourself logically that the empty threats from fundies are ridiculous. And you should do that. But if you are around them, and you spend time with them, then regardless of how much defense you have built up with reason and sense, your subconscious mind will unfortunately absorb their very negative, depressing view on reality, at a more primitive emotional level, that will cause you to doubt yourself.

Therefore, there is absolutely no reason to voluntarily spend time around them, they are poisonous for your mind.
