WHAT CLONIDINE IS
Clonidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist — meaning it activates alpha-2 receptors which inhibit the release of adrenaline from nerve terminals. It is currently prescribed for high blood pressure, ADHD, and withdrawal symptoms. It is described primarily as an anti-adrenaline / anti-stress drug.

Lowers Blood pressure, Lowers adrenaline, Lowers cortisol, ACTH, and overall stress response.
Its one of the only drugs that lowers blood pressure adrenaline & cortisol at the same time.
All supporting studies are in humans
Schizophrenia
IBD / IBS / Ulcerative Colitis
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
Type 1 Diabetes prevention
Hypertension (stress-induced)
Libido / DHT / Estrogen balance
Hypoglycemic shock / lactic acidosis
Bone loss from SSRIs
Cancer / tumor spread prevention
Takotsubo syndrome / broken heart syndrome / grief
Clonidine is described as "probably an ideal replacement of metoprolol" (beta blocker used in the study) for treating Takotsubo/broken heart syndrome because it:
Drug/substance addiction (broad anti-stress)
Anti-obesity / anti-NO / bromocriptine parallel
ALTERNATIVES TO CLONIDINE MENTIONED
When clonidine is unavailable, these are listed as working through the same or similar anti-adrenaline pathways:

Lowers Blood pressure, Lowers adrenaline, Lowers cortisol, ACTH, and overall stress response.
Its one of the only drugs that lowers blood pressure adrenaline & cortisol at the same time.
All supporting studies are in humans
Schizophrenia
- A single low dose of clonidine normalized P50 auditory gating in stably medicated schizophrenia patients
- Mechanism: alpha-2 noradrenergic agonism normalizes sensory gating deficits caused by chronic stress/adrenaline excess
- Other anti-adrenaline substances may help similarly
IBD / IBS / Ulcerative Colitis
- Clonidine described as "a viable option as a single drug therapy" for IBD, IBS, and UC
- These conditions are predominantly stress/sympathetic nervous system driven
- Most effective dose: 100 mcg × 2 daily (200 mcg total) — described as well-tolerated by almost anyone
- Multiple human studies cited
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
- Adrenaline is elevated in CFS patients; clonidine lowers it and relieves symptoms
- Potentially the first step toward official approval for CFS treatment
- Clonidine is "a quite versatile drug"
Type 1 Diabetes prevention
- Anti-adrenaline drugs including clonidine (class: alpha adrenergic agonists) can prevent development of Type 1 diabetes and reduce severity of established disease
- Mechanism: adrenaline raises free fatty acids (FFAs) which are toxic to insulin-producing beta cells; reducing adrenaline protects pancreatic beta cells
- This class prevents the PUFA-FFA-beta cell destruction cycle
Hypertension (stress-induced)
- Clonidine lowered stress-induced hypertension
- Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine HCl) is suggested as an accessible alternative for those unable to obtain clonidine — noting it lowers both adrenaline and cortisol through similar downstream pathways
Libido / DHT / Estrogen balance
- Clonidine has been reported to increase libido (symptom of higher T/DHT) and decrease water retention (symptom of high estrogen)
- This connects to a study showing noradrenaline (which clonidine lowers) increases testosterone-to-estradiol conversion in the pineal gland by 72% and depresses DHT synthesis by 39–53%
- Clonidine by lowering noradrenaline may therefore reduce estrogen and protect DHT
Hypoglycemic shock / lactic acidosis
- Clonidine would be speculated to protect against shock/endotoxin-induced hyperlactatemia in the liver, gut, and brain — based on anti-adrenaline mechanism
- Adrenaline drives lactic acid accumulation; blocking it should protect
Bone loss from SSRIs
- SSRIs raise serotonin → raises ACTH → raises cortisol AND raises adrenaline → bone loss
- Clonidine would be a "much better option than beta blockers" for SSRI-induced bone loss because it lowers both adrenaline and cortisol (beta blockers only block adrenaline receptors, not cortisol)
- Beta blockers can leave males impotent and women demented; clonidine avoids these effects
Cancer / tumor spread prevention
- Chronic sympathetic nervous system activation drives VEGF upregulation → promotes lymphatic angiogenesis → facilitates tumor spread
- Clonidine is suggested as a more suitable alternative to propranolol (beta blocker) for blocking stress-driven cancer promotion, due to fewer side effects
- Aspirin and COX inhibitors also cited as complementary (blocking VEGF via different mechanism)
Takotsubo syndrome / broken heart syndrome / grief
Clonidine is described as "probably an ideal replacement of metoprolol" (beta blocker used in the study) for treating Takotsubo/broken heart syndrome because it:
- Lowers adrenaline (like beta blockers do)
- Additionally lowers ACTH and cortisol (beta blockers do not)
- Possibly lowers serotonin (heavily involved in grieving)
- Avoids beta blocker side effects (impotence, cognitive impairment)
Drug/substance addiction (broad anti-stress)
- Elevated noradrenergic signaling is an etiological factor in abuse of a broad range of addictive substances
- "Chronic use of pharmacological agents that reduce noradrenergic signaling, such as clonidine... may help prevent or treat drug abuse in general"
- This connects to the "Rat Park Experiment" showing rats only use addictive substances under stress
Anti-obesity / anti-NO / bromocriptine parallel
- If alpha-adrenergic agonism is the main mechanism behind bromocriptine's anti-obesity effects, clonidine (same receptor class) may have similar anti-obesity and anti-diabetic effects
- This is speculative and not confirmed
ALTERNATIVES TO CLONIDINE MENTIONED
When clonidine is unavailable, these are listed as working through the same or similar anti-adrenaline pathways:
- Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine HCl) — most directly recommended alternative
- Salt — "the most accessible method of reducing adrenaline"
- Progesterone — lowers catecholamine release
- Aspirin — indirect anti-stress via anti-estrogen/anti-cortisol mechanisms
- Guanfacine, lofexidine, prazosin, propranolol — same drug class alternatives
