Contacts will never be realistic because you cannot mimic the actual shape of the iris with a colored contact. This natural iris visibly sits beneath the cornea and some space can be seen between them.

Colored contacts necessitate the fake iris resting on top of this lens, which creates a lack of depth and it will never not look like shit from indirect angles

You also cannot immitate the outer-convex inner-concave shape of the iris alone. Contacts can only provide a strictly convex shape.

Never-mind the fact that there's an obvious colored grid sitting on top of your eyes to anyone who looks too close
