What's really depressing when applying for top universities like Russell group universities and Ivy leagues, especially in math / science, is the brutal admission exams. Average guys had to slave their whole summer and start studying 4 months before a maths entrance exam, to just get slapped in the face with a mediocre score.

These top universities filter out the gifted and genius like diamonds from the dirt and just fuck the rest of us over.

I was one of the people who slaved their summer away, I got around a 6 out of max grade of 9.0. I got into the interview stage from my stats, but got rejected post (this was for comp sci at Cambridge). Some guy on socials gets a 8.9 / 9.0. You do not understand how insane a >8 grade is in the math admission exam I took, and he tells me he practiced past papers in exam conditions few weeks before.

No, that's not the reason, you were fucking handed 150IQ on a plate and was put into maths tuition from 9 so you developed a supreme logical analysing intellect. "forget the girls, become a doctor become an engineer bro" You will still get rejected, just not from your face but your talent.

Should've had a hedge fund MD as a father to send me straight to Harvard instead :lul:.

Im not talking about SAT, im talking about course specific admission exams, such as the STEP for cambridge maths, or TMUA for cambridge comp sci. Did not specify my bad. I think admission exams im referring to are for more EU/UK unis.

only problem is that iq don't really apply to math until extreme levels of math like you wont be seeing these classes until masters +, same goes with comp sci most people teach themselves data structures and algorithms literally in elementary and high school to pass "prestigious" company OAs. amazon and facebook literally have the exact questions and answers for their interviews just gotta remember them

also its best to be the same race as your recruiters

the math tests that I had to go through are solely based on problem solving in math context, well the ones I mentioned atleast. IQ extremely helps in this. Computer science admissions to top unis in UK dont care that you learnt data structures when you were 14, anyone can do that, they make you do math exams (This is more for top 5 unis really). If you have heard of senior maths challenges / junior olympiads it goes to that level. The people who get in also just have like Gold in physics olympiad or top 100 in maths olympiad, IQ matters alot here.

You think when practicing math and trying to solve harder retarded problems, higher IQ won't help? You will see things other people can't see , and you will see it much quicker than them, you can work faster than others, and with the extreme time pressure they put on you in the real thing, the best thinkers rise to the top basically. i mean what are you trying to accomplish on going to these competitive spots sounds a lot more than just going to an ivy league, most of these people arent concerned with being a quant or making money just pure research and they dedicated their lives to it, it says TMUA cambridge comp sci has a 7.6 % acceptance rate unless there is like something before that

yeah, there are over 1500 applicants, for 2024 atleast, with under 170 offers each year. Consider its a single course, and usually everyone who applies has clean school grades anyway. For me, I just wanted to get in because my father did, and why df does janestreet only hire oxbridge man hahah

the process of applying is so long, first you need perfect grades, great personal statement and a reference. Then get great on the admission exam, then perform great on the interview (which is also them asking you problem solving math face to face, usually professors).

I dont understand why people are so obsessed with quant they time/effort work 60 - 80 hours in a toxic environment to make 300 -400k right out of college or work 40 hours and make 200k at faang which might not even worth it when most medical/education companies work like 10 hours and make 100k can just stack jobs.

sounds like pure pride and prestige and you can go to a community college and get to faang just not a quant firm unless your being a swe at a quant firm but you get paid way less

yeah true, the hours are bad, pressure and stress. I gotta admit i am kinda chasing the prestige. I am based in london, so the tech salaries are way lower than in the US. The highest salaries are to quants here. I am considering / would be down to take a faang job aswell to be fair.
Are you a student or finished?
