Before Fixing an Overbite, Understand What Causes It

An overbite can be genetic, but it’s also influenced by habits like thumb sucking, nail biting, prolonged pacifier use, tongue-thrusting, and mouth breathing.

Bad habits during growth years = bad jaw development.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore It

Leaving an overbite untreated can lead to:

  • Jaw pain, TMJ issues, and headaches
  • Gum recession & tooth decay
  • Bone loss over time
  • Chewing and speech problems
  • Weaker facial aesthetics (receded jaw, narrow face)
The longer you wait, the harder (and more expensive) it is to fix.

Get Diagnosed First (You can’t fix what you don’t understand.)

Book an appointment with a dentist or orthodontist → they’ll take X-rays and possibly a 3D scan to see whether it’s skeletal or dental.

This step matters because the right treatment depends on the cause.

Treatment Options (Ranked)

1. Palate Expansion (Best Structural Fix)

  • Widens your upper jaw by applying outward pressure on the palate.
  • In teens: splits the midpalatal suture for natural bone growth.
  • In adults: requires SARPE (Surgically Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion).
  • Improves bite, breathing, and facial width.
  • Timeframe: 3–6 months active + retention phase.
2. Damon Braces / Advanced Braces Systems

  • Moves teeth and encourages better jaw positioning.
  • Faster and less invasive than surgery in moderate cases.
  • Avoid “camouflage orthodontics” (premolar extractions) — it straightens teeth but worsens facial recession.

3. Clear Aligners (Invisalign, etc.)
  • Good for mild dental overbites, discreet, removable.
  • Not effective for skeletal issues.

4. Orthognathic Surgery
  • For extreme skeletal overbites in adults.
  • Permanently repositions jaws for ideal alignment.
  • Long recovery, but life-changing in severe cases.

Supportive At-Home Work

  • Mewing: Keep tongue on the palate, mouth closed, breathe through your nose.(don’t fix anything just don’t make things worse)
  • Jaw exercises: Chin tucks, gum chewing, resistance openings.
  • Myofunctional therapy: Corrects tongue thrust & mouth breathing habits.
These won’t replace real orthodontics, but they help maintain results and improve facial posture.

⚠️ Not medical advice. Always research your options and confirm with a qualified orthodontist.

Laugh all you want, but myofunctional therapy is literally used in orthodontics and speech pathology. Mewing isn’t magic, but proper tongue posture and jaw muscle training helps maintain expansion results and prevent relapse.

talk to ur orthodontist
yeah I said that , but just so you know, not all orthodontists recommend structural fixes like palate expansion they often push “camouflage” braces instead. Doing your own research helps you ask the right questions and get the best outcome.

i’m getting BSSO after braces

U can ask the orthodont what you want, just cause they reccomend one thing doesent mean u have to get it

do you mean Invisalign?
Yeah, exactly. Invisalign or regular braces can straighten teeth, but if the overbite is skeletal, they mostly camouflage the problem they don’t actually fix jaw structure like a palate expander or Damon braces would.

Exactly, that’s the point. You can ask for what actually fixes the skeletal issue palate expansion, Damon braces, or surgery if needed. You don’t have to settle for “camouflage” treatments. But not everyone know that

Makes sense. BSSO after braces is basically the only way of fixing a severe skeletal overbite braces align the teeth first, then the surgery repositions the jaw. It’s legit, just more invasive and takes longer than doing expansion early.
