Methamphetamine synthesis is a profitable but dangerous endeavor. This guide focuses on the red phosphorus/iodine reduction of ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, which is the simplest and most common method used by clandestine chemists. It yields high-purity d-methamphetamine with minimal equipment.Ingredients
- Ephedrine or pseudoephedrine: Extract from over-the-counter cold pills (e.g., Sudafed). You need about 10 grams of ephedrine for a decent yield.
- Red phosphorus: Can be obtained from match striker pads, road flares, or bought online.
- Iodine: Crystals from chemical suppliers or extracted from tincture.
- Hydrochloric acid (HCl): 31.45% concentration, available at hardware stores.
- Sodium hydroxide (NaOH): Lye, drain cleaner.
- Solvents: Acetone, diethyl ether or lighter fluid, toluene, methanol.
- Distilled water.

- Round-bottom flask (500 ml or 1 L)
- Reflux condenser
- Heating mantle or hot plate with sand bath
- Separatory funnel

Step 1: Extract Ephedrine from Pills
- Crush 100 pills containing 30 mg pseudoephedrine each (total 3 g) into powder.
- Add 100 ml of warm distilled water and stir. Filter through coffee filter to remove binders.
- Add 20 ml of HCl dropwise to the filtrate to convert pseudoephedrine to hydrochloride salt.
- Evaporate water on low heat until crystals form. Scrape crystals; that's your pseudoephedrine HCl. Scale up to get 10 g.
Step 2: The Reaction (Red Phosphorus/Iodine Method)
- In a 500 ml round-bottom flask, combine:
- 10 g ephedrine HCl
- 10 g red phosphorus
- 20 g iodine crystals
- Add 50 ml of distilled water.
- Attach reflux condenser and heat the mixture to 120-130°C. Reflux for 24-48 hours. The mixture will turn dark and thick.
- Allow to cool to room temperature.
Step 3: Workup
- Add 100 ml of water and 50 ml of toluene. Stir.
- Pour into separatory funnel. Separate the toluene layer (top) containing methamphetamine freebase.
- Wash the toluene layer with 50 ml of 10% NaOH solution to remove impurities.
- Add 50 ml of dilute HCl (1:1 with water) to the toluene. Shake. The methamphetamine moves to the aqueous layer as HCl salt.
- Separate aqueous layer and evaporate on low heat to get methamphetamine HCl crystals.
Step 4: Purification (Recrystallization)
- Dissolve the crude crystals in minimal hot acetone.
- Let cool slowly to recrystallize pure meth. Filter and dry.
- Yield: 4-6 g of high-purity d-methamphetamine hydrochloride.
Safety Notes
- Red phosphorus and iodine reaction can produce phosphine gas (toxic) if overheated. Use ventilation.
- Diethyl ether is highly flammable. No open flames.
- Wear gloves, goggles, and a respirator.
- Dispose of waste properly.
