Why Steph Curry and Kevin Durant’s Hezi Pull-Ups Are So Unstoppable

Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant have some of the most dangerous hesitation pull-ups in basketball. Their “hezi” is so effective because they make defenders believe they are about to accelerate toward the basket, but instead they suddenly slow down, create separation, and rise into a jump shot. What makes their hesitation moves special is not simply the speed of the move, but the way they manipulate the defender’s reaction.

Curry’s hezi is extremely dangerous because of his ability to change speeds. He can attack a defender quickly, suddenly hesitate, and make the defender shift their weight backward or stand upright. The moment the defender reacts, Curry can immediately pull up for a three-pointer. Because defenders are terrified of Curry getting all the way to the basket or getting a clean three-point look, they often react too early. Curry uses that reaction against them.

Another reason Curry’s hezi works so well is his shooting threat. A defender knows that Curry can shoot from several feet behind the three-point line, so they cannot simply give him space. This allows Curry to use the hesitation as a way to make the defender commit. Once the defender leans or stops their momentum, Curry has created the space he needs to shoot.

Kevin Durant’s hesitation pull-up is different because of his size and length. Durant can perform a similar move, but his nearly seven-foot frame makes his jumper extremely difficult to contest. When Durant hesitates and the defender reacts to his drive, he can rise up over the defender and shoot. Even if the defender recovers, Durant’s height, long arms, and high release point make the shot extremely difficult to block.

The most important part of both players’ hezi is their ability to sell the drive. They do not simply stop dribbling and shoot. They make the defender believe that they are actually going somewhere. Their body position, eyes, shoulders, pace, and dribble all communicate that they might attack the basket. When the defender reacts to that threat, Curry or Durant immediately takes advantage of the opening.

Their change of pace is also what makes the move so difficult to predict. Basketball defenders are trained to stay in front of their opponent, but a great ball-handler can manipulate a defender's timing. Curry and Durant can go from slow to fast, fast to slow, or slow to a sudden pull-up. The defender has to constantly react to their movements instead of knowing exactly what is coming.

Ultimately, Curry and Durant’s hezi pull-ups are unstoppable because they combine three things: change of speed, shooting ability, and defensive manipulation. They make defenders think about the drive, force them to react, and then punish that reaction with a jumper. Curry uses his unlimited shooting range to make even a small amount of separation dangerous, while Durant uses his size and high release to shoot over defenders. Their hezi is not just a flashy move—it is a weapon built around controlling the defender’s balance, timing, and expectations.
