STEP 1
Figure out ur hair type and hair porosity:
THIS ROUTINE WILL BE TARGETED FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH 2B-3B HAIR
2B HAIR:
Most ppl with 2b hair will have low porosity. This hair cannot take too many products and u will have to be careful which products u are using so as not to weigh down the hair follicles. I recommend to never use more than 2 products, and for 2b even more than 1 is a bit of a stretch.
Invest in a light leave in conditioner, krulle and as i am are probably the best options here.
2C HAIR:
Same as 2b except u might be able handle a second product. Optionally, get a lightweight curl cream (krulle, rizos) and use that in addition to the leave in. Obv stop if it weighs down ur hair too much.
3A HAIR:
ATP, u can almost definitely use two products. They should probably still be lightweight tho. I recommend krulle/as i am leave in + krulle/rizos curl cream. U might be able to try finger coils here.
3B HAIR:
U might even be able to use a third product here, and also ur hair porosity might be different (not low). U obv dont have to but u could use a gel if u wanted to here, again as long as it doesnt weight ur hair down. U can probably also try finger coils here. U can also try some heavier products, like camille rose.
GENERAL RULES OF THUMB FOR ALL THESE TYPES:
This is the routine I follow. I should remind u, and this is very important, that EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. I did a lot of experimenting with different products and routines until I found what worked for me, so js because it works for me doesnt mean it will work for u, and vice versa. U will have to try different things out and see what works best for YOU.
Day 1 (WASH DAY):
Shampoo + condition. I use Based body works shampoo and conditioner, ive heard Camille rose is good for heavier hair types. Rizos shampoo and conditioner is also very good, works for many hair types.
For shampooing, make sure ur only washing ur scalp, not the hair follicles. I always do this twice to ensure everything has been cleansed. Rinse with hot/normal water once ur finished.
For conditioning, u should scrunch this into ur hair. U can also do finger coils if u would like to. Then, it’s VERY IMPORTANT, that u wait for a few minutes before rinsing it out, 3-7 minutes is good. It’s also VERY IMPORTANT that u rinse out the conditioner with COLD WATER. This is very important to keep the hair follicles healthy. U should always condition AFTER shampooing, so that when u leave the shower ur hair has most recently been exposed to the cold water.
Once u get out, get a microfiber towel to dry ur hair. Don’t shake ur hair up with the towel this will fuck it up. Js scrunch a bit so it’s not soaking wet, but don’t completely dry it either. Then, take a wide tooth comb (like this one):
And comb out ur hair. IF U HAVE 3A/3B IT MIGHT BE BETTER TO USE A BRUSH, like this one:
Once youve combed/brushed ur hair out, scrunch it up a bit. Make sure it’s loose and not completely straightened by the brush. Once youve scrunched and shaken it a bit, make sure it’s still wet. It’s VERY IMPORTANT that ur hair is still a bit wet here, but not soaked. If its too dry u probably fucked up but u can always make it wet with a spray bottle like this one (CRUCIAL INVESTMENT Btw):
Then, u can apply ur product(s).
Always START with the leave in. Rake and Scrunch it into ur hair. It’s VERY IMPORTANT that u always rake and scrunch. Then, if u would like to and ur hair type allows it, u can add a curl cream after. U should exclusively scrunch this one in, no raking. In general tho, scrunching > raking if u want tighter and more defined curls + more volume.
Then u can let it airdry or get a diffuser and diffuse it for a few minutes. Very important if u do this to know how to do it correctly, js hovering over ur hair. I personally dont diffuse so it’s up to u. Basically it js makes ur hair dry faster and some ppl claim it gives them more volume, personally i never noticed that tho. Plenty of tutorials online for this.
DAYS 2-7:
When i wake up in the morning, i take my spray bottle and spray my hair until it’s a bit damp. Usually not a good idea to make it soaking wet unless ur curls are very tight. Also take ur hair porosity into account here, I generally have to spray more cuz i have low porosity hair. once ur hair is a bit damp, scrunch it until u achieve the desired curls. Another trick u can do is add a touch of leave in to ur spray bottle if u rly need a refresh, but don’t do this too often, too much and u will weigh down ur hair, esp if u have a lighter hair type.
This is a great way to refresh ur hair for the day!!!
It’s also VERY important that u invest in a BONNET or SILK/SATIN PILLOWCASE. This will protect ur hair overnight and prevent tangles.
U can wet it again on Day 3-4 in the shower, or u can even wash it again if u want. but u should never wash less than like 3 days apart, ESPECIALLY if u have heavier hair type, in which its better to only wash like once a week. In general i think it’s honestly best to wash every 4-7 days, again it’s up to u and dependent on ur individual hair type. Ngl ive even gone a couple weeks without washing it and it still looks good.
Also, i personally dont use mousse as i feel it weighs down my hair (2c/3a) but u can try it if u would like to, esp if ur hair type is on the heavier side. Again, its gonna be different for everyone.
Another tip: DONT TOUCH UR HAIR TOO MUCH, this could damage it and make it frizzy!
Once u follow this routine consistently for a couple months, ur hair will change DRAMATICALLY. It will be so much healthier, curlier, voluminous, basically everything good.
I think it took about 4-6 months for me to get to a place where i was rly satisfied with it, but with this routine u might be able to do it even quicker!!! But remember, EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT, and we all have our own unique hair type that responds differently to various methods and techniques
