I don't know, I rarely eat those...
But in the communist era, animal products(meat,milk, cheese, eggs, etc.) were hard to find, sugar and cooking oil were rationed, huge lines formed when bread arrived in stores, etc. There were even shortages of basic items like toilet paper, soap, razor blades, light bulbs, batteries, pencils, etc...People would spend a huge part of their life simply waiting in line to buy stuff.

Back in the 1940s
In the 1980s too...Romania took huge loans and paid them all, the population suffered for this, most food was exported. In the 1990s communism fell, now there was food, but there was no money, people were poor, those wore difficult times.
