they both seem to do similar things but what are the differnces in what they do and work, why would someone get canthoplasty over infra implants and vice versa
 
They're quite different. One is adjusting your soft tissues, and the other is adding mass and changing structure. If your infraorbitals are weak (i.e. negative orbital vector, wide rims, etc.), a canthoplasty would be an imperfect fix. When using a cantho alone, you are generally only going to change the shape of the soft tissues around the eye without addressing the underlying cause - the deficient structure.

Depending on the circumstances a cantho alone might be enough to get what you want. Other times, implants alone will result in the desired effect. And sometimes a combination of both will yield the best results. It really depends on what exactly you're trying to change.
