The main difference between the Inferno and Purgatorio isn't the quantity of pain every soul is suffering there flaggellated by the will of God
But there's something that gives the damned in Purgatory infinitely greater relief than the souls in Hell. That is, understanding and accepting pain through the hope of being saved. Therefore, it is the realization of fleeting and mortal pain that gives some hope, compared to the damned in Hell, who are forced to experience pain without finite limits and thus lose the most important thing: hope.
