I have a friend who when he will be laying on his deathbed, he will regret all the times he spent campaigning for this or that candidate. This or that political issue instead of trying to connect with God. Nothing I say will change his mind. His mind is made up.

Politics is all about justifying already made decisions/policies, your friend isn't doing anything of value , having a bilateral system like today(left/right) makes the process easier as one of the two parties will absorb policies by affinity/in spite of the other. A reaction to proposed ideas/issues has to happen and it's either 0 or 1, in any case the pre-packaged concept will have atleast half of the population supporting it, therefore is "justified" by the population consensus because we live in a "democracy"
