TLDR: Sometimes, when someone brutally hurts you, it isn't personal, and you must decenter yourself in order to take action and move forward.

Junior Year of High school I asked the prettiest girl at school to come to prom with me. She said yes because we had been friends since freshman year, and I was the only person she knew at the school (she only attended this school part time so she never got to know anyone else).

She actually hinted at me to ask her wayy back in December by literally starting the convo over text by asking if I was taking anyone to prom.

This girl was way out of my league. At the time I was short and chubby from the pandemic, had no experience navigating rooms with attractive women, I was just a Sub 5 loser. She was something else, 6'2 slavic HTB.

Come June and we go to prom. At prom, I am literally uncontrollably embarrassed by how out of my league she is. The second she arrived, everyone wanted to get to know her, and at the dinner before the dance, I literally couldn't get a seat at the table she was sitting at, and instead of just going to another table I pulled up a chair next to her and ate with the plate on my lap. Just a myriad of brutally embarrassing things like this over the weekend but let me get to the main event.

At prom she meets another guy, dudes taller than her, and much better looking than me, and they hit it off. And I still remember that burning feeling under my skin as I realized what happened. After prom we all got split up and I was with some friends, and me and her were texting, and she told me she was hanging out with some people in another room at the venue. Its liker late atp, like midnight. I'll never forget the feeling of dread in my heart as I walked towards that room, I still remember looking at the moon and thinking about how badly I had already lost. I had been crushing on this girl for damn near 3 years, and in one night she was swept away.

I arrive at the door of the room, turn the corner and I see her in a circle of people chatting, her head on the lap of that guy from prom. Her enderpearl eyes met my brown ones for a literally half second, and i turned around and left so quick.

Its been years since this happened, and what I think is simultaneously the most brutal, and most calming part of this whole story is that what became a life-defining moment for me, something that had me obsessed about my looks ever since, is most definetly a microcosmic, forgettable moment to her.

From her perspective, yes she knew all along this guy (me) that she was friends with probably had a crush on her, that she took some photos with him at prom or whatever and she just happened to meet this other real hot guy and they hit it off for a night. But to her thats just an average weekend. Her dad is ultra rich so she just travels the world and meets so many people.

A lifelong scar to you, can often be nothing more than a brief hiccup to someone else. Use this piece of knowledge to decenter yourself, and focus forward more.
