I (15 yrs old) have been waitlisted for years for braces (NHS), now I am being offered them. From young age I have had allergies and struggled with mouth breathing - I was taken to the doctors about this when I was young and they told me the dangers of mouth breathing and encouraged me to nose breathe. Obviously because I was like 7 I didn’t really give a shit and as a preteen I had a very weak/recessed face and obviously my palette was/ is narrow and I have an overbite. Around 11 I had the enlightenment that maybe oh I should actually should nose breathe and have good posture etc. since then my face has only developed for the better as I learnt more, obviously still not perfect but pretty good considering what I started with. It’s been years of progress and recently I was taken to the orthodontist in regards of my crowded teeth. After the first checkup / X-rays he determined that extraction and braces would be the method to get straight teeth. The last thing I wanted was extractions and I asked if any other method would be possible to which he said no. Today was the second appointment to sign the paperwork that i consent to braces, beforehand I asked about expansion and to which he responded that it wasn’t possible as there isn’t enough space?? To which I’m confused about. I refused to sign the paperwork and they offered me a window to sign it until 25th? Of June. My parents said they don’t mind if I don’t want to go through and understand my concerns. The plan that the orthodontist offered was braces then extraction of 4 premolars(2 upper and 2 lower) then retainers and stuff. that many extractions seems so unnecessary to me, there is only one upper premolar that can’t fit and there is a gap (between the two teeth it’s supposed to be between ) that seems relatively able to fit that tooth with a few mm of expansion. Orthodontist also worry about crowding because I have wisdom teeth coming in. Do I undergo the extractions? I don’t want to be extremely recessed and basically undo my years of development, and end up looking super ugly as shit just to have straight teeth. They did offer referral after I rejected but NHS system is shit and I would have to wait for ages just to end up getting the same answer. How can I expand my palette since I’m pretty certain I’m not agreeing to the extraction ? Should I wait till I have my own funds and go to airway orthodontists
